The Virginia Beach Forum will present Phillip Hirschkop, the history-making lawyer featured in the recently released movie “Loving”. Hirschkop successfully argued the LOVING Case before the Supreme Court in 1967, and 50 years later, this true story was made into a movie earlier this year. Tickets are $20 each and available at The Sandler Center Box Office, or 757-504-4327.

Cost: Payment required - A legal scholar and attorney, Phillip Jay Hirschkop representing American icons Martin Luther King, Jr. and Norman Mailer first appeared before the United States Supreme Court to argue on behalf of Mildred and Richard Loving in the landmark 1967 case of Loving v. Virginia. His representation is depicted in the recent film “Loving” which tells the story of a mixed-race couple arrested after they defied Virginia’s miscegenation laws and were banished from the state by a judge who threatened them with prison if they returned. Hirschkop was assigned the Loving case shortly after graduating Georgetown University Law Center by the American Civil Liberties Union. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the famed decision and Hirschkop will be sharing his wit and experience with the Virginia Beach Forum on October 16. 2017 at Cape Henry Collegiate School Auditorium. Residing in Lorton, Virginia, Hirschkop has spent the last 50 years working as a crusader for social justice defending the rights of women, teachers, war demonstrators and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Norman Mailer wrote of Hirschkop, his “dark hair and powerful short body put double weight in back of every remark … What he did believe, what stood out about him, was his love of law as an intricate, deceptive, smashing, driving, tricky game somewhere between wrestling, football and philosophy – what also stood out was his love of winning, his tenacity, his detestation of defeat.” Hirschkop graduated Columbia College with a Bachelor’s degree in 1960 and Columbia University with a Masters in Engineering in 1961. He also served in the military as a Green Beret.
