      West African Drum Class

Did you ever want to learn how to play the drums but didn't know where to begin? This is the perfect class for you.......An all levels West African Drum class that allows beginners to learn the basics of rhythm and technique and more experienced players to learn the accompaniments, solos, as well as dundun rhythms. Each class is tailored to the skill level of the students attending. Treat yourself to something new and step out of your comfort zone...... The Wheelz Collective Founder and Director Kamiruri Kelly (AKA “Kam”) began drumming, dancing, acting and studying martial arts at the age of 9 at Indoda Entsha in 1990. By the age of 14, Kam was performing and studied under the instruction of Gene Osborne, M’Bemba Bangoura, Yusef Kumbassa and other instructors that specialized in West African culture and traditions. At age 16, Kam was the innocent victim of gun violence which left him paralyzed. Determined to make the best of his situation, Kam returned to Indoda Entsha and taught himself how to drum comfortably from his wheelchair, using this form of creative expression as a healing mechanism. World class drummers Osei and Yao Ababio took Kam under their wings and taught him a much more advanced style of drumming. He was taught how to play most of the instruments in the Djembe Orchestra and also how to teach them effectively. By drumming, Kam is able to create an outlet to express his voice and emotions. For 20+ years now, Kam has worked with the youth, senior citizens and the disabled: teaching, motivating, inspiring and giving hope to all his students. His method of instruction is patient, calming, energizing and healing. The Wheelz Collective desires to show and educate the community regarding the importance of the “ARTZ” and how it can positively impact individuals, both mentally and physically, while encouraging participation amongst the disabled and elderly communities. “I believe that everybody can benefit from participating in some version of the arts and should have access to do so.” - Kamiruri Kelly, Founder, The Wheelz Collective Inc.
